Drag Racing aint for sissies… but the girls love it.





One of the major sponsors at WSID, Skips Fire Service along with J&C Mowers, sponsor and race kiddies’ dragsters. One of the two girls in the team, Amy Sebalj has already appeared on the Kerry-Anne morning show to talk about her racing. Amy races against a bunch of girls in her segment including Jasmin Day… whose mum Doina is a keen drag racer herself, infact Doina’s whole team are men who work on the two dragsters for their women.

Cruisin’ the pit area, I find Kerry Williams in her modified dragster, Kerry kicks ass often about the men she races against while her husbands broad smile is a testament about the way he enjoys his wife’s determination.

Let’s not forget me friends Paul and Dearne Stephen, Dearne is a keen racer having made Paul a little envious about her times. Debbie Reed runs a whole team.

Rachelle Splat is quite a pretty girl but looks can be deceiving, I just wouldn’t imagine her doing under five seconds in a “top fueler” but I’ve seen it with my own eyes so “mum’s” the word.

I reckon it’s quite funny that the girls are a real threat to the men for competition. What I expected to be a major “man domain” is thwart with chicks.

Ronnie Palumbo won the Junior Dragster event at the Summer Nationals which places him at “equal first” for the Australian Championship in his event. The series will be finalised at Willowbank on the Queens Birthday weekend in June but Ronnie may have to travel to Mackay for a round there if any of his competitors gain enough points over him between now and the Queens Birthday.

Ronnie is sponsored by Skips Fire Service and J&C Mowers, Joe from J&C told me that Ronnie has broken an eleven year drought for his sponsors. I had a beer with Frank Palumbo after the win… you wouldn’t find a prouder dad in Australia at the moment.

I had a chat with Ronnie last year about where he thinks his drag racing career will lead him. Ronnie told me that his ultimate dream was to pilot a “Top Fueler”… when I told his dad about the ambition, Frank said… “I’ll kick his arse; he’ll be pickin tomato’s”...

Frank may have changed his opinion recently...

Ronnie’s coming equal third with a few other kids at WSID so his competition will be rather stiff between now and June, a very interesting situation.
