Testing, check one two... Saturday 4th Febuary

I dropped my shovel a little early on overtime in my day job. All the stuff I do for love costs me money… funny about how I’ve heard that a lot at the drags lately.

I rushed to WSID, it was only when I was almost there that I realised my car needed fuel… “Oh well, as long as I get there, I’ll worry about getting back later”…

I’m new to this media thing at the drags. I have to ask about what to do to get the vest and bangle, sign here, and there... I’ve just come away from a six year stout as “associate producer” on a Martin Brown film attempting to be made about the “Milperra Massacre”. After six years working for love on the coolest project on earth, I need to move on for a while. Dearne Stephen made fun of me when I told her that I wanted to spend more time at the drags. The men around Paul Stephen’s camp had a chuckle about it. “You’re hooked on drag racing aren’t you Bill?!” said Dearne.

I’ve got too many projects in the pipeline. My sitcom, photography, writing editorials, advertising manager at NetFM “the worlds bestest internet broadcaster”, my E-magazine where you’re reading this, the film and… now, drag racing. Let’s not forget there’s always my day job at Energy Australia digging trenches. The film can take care of itself from here on in I reckon. It has one of the most prevailing teams on earth involved in its direction. I’m still left as a story consultant while they know my number if they need me desperately.

But Drag Racing!

The production went to the WSID almost three Summer Nationals ago when they first re-opened at Eastern Creek, to see a member of one of the clubs involved in the film when Martin Brown brought Mikey Robbins along to discuss involvement on a new project as well.

I’ve always got a camera around my neck… I took photos at the first Summer Nationals, now I’m waiting for the third.

Only a few days and I need the scent of methanol. I’ve never been a junky before. It smells like the fruit it comes from… sweet.

I saw an ad on a team’s car that read “sponsors wanted”. I watched the drag racing on Channel 9 Sunday.

I’m not anyone at the drags in Sydney, but I see something lacking in the sponsorship it takes to keep up. I’ve taken it upon myself to search for the money. I know where it is and who’s got it. The drags have been missing for a while… it’s as simple as that.

And now they’re back with a vengeance.

Just practising…

Mark Flowers took his 1948-50 Austin A40 Ute dragster to Western Australia not long ago. Mark told me while he was there, a nice bloke and his daughter came up to chat… Mark put the little girl in his car and plugged her into the seat. Apparently it was quite a thrill for her. Not long after that the gentleman revealed himself as the boss at Remote Area Concrete and got back to Mark about sponsoring his machine if he came back to Perth for his drag racing. So while Mark was practicing at WSID… as I write this article, Mark is actually preparing to take his dragster over to WA for their Summer Nationals in March.

Good luck Mark and I’ll see everyone else at WSID 9,10 and 11 February.

Bullshit Bill.
